Child Protection
A Safe Haven for Vulnerable Children
Established on May 1, 2017, the Shekinah Children’s Home is the first and only registered children’s home in Zvishavane District. Located in Ward 14, Chirere, just 15km from Zvishavane town, the home was born from a vision to create a secure, nurturing environment for children in need of temporary or long-term care.
Initially a vandalized farmhouse, the property underwent extensive renovations to transform it into a safe and dignified living space. Today, the home is equipped with running water from a borehole, electricity powered by both a transformer and a solar backup system, repaired infrastructure, and a warm, family-like atmosphere.
We currently care for 13 children:
- 11 in long-term foster care
- 2 in short-term emergency care pending reunification or legal processes
To date, Shekinah has supported 11 children in long-term care, three of whom have reached adulthood and been reunited with their families. Two are now pursuing higher education and continue to receive support from the organization.
Our Approach to Care
We provide more than just shelter. At Shekinah, each child receives:
- Nutritious meals and basic health care
- Emotional and psychosocial support
- Access to education and vocational training
- Spiritual guidance and mentorship
- Reintegration support for those being reunited with families
We work closely with the Department of Social Development, courts, and other stakeholders to ensure all care decisions are in the best interest of the child.
Child Protection at the Core
At the heart of everything we do is a firm commitment to child protection. Shekinah Glory Organisation upholds strict child safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure that every child is safe from all forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and discrimination. All staff and volunteers undergo screening and training in child protection protocols.
We are especially mindful of the vulnerabilities of children who have experienced trauma, abandonment, or abuse. Our care approach is trauma-informed, rights-based, and rooted in love, dignity, and respect.
Our mission is to raise children who are not just survivors—but resilient, hopeful individuals equipped to thrive and contribute positively to society.
Sponsor a Child’s Education Project
At Shekinah Glory Organisation, we believe that every child deserves a chance to learn, grow, and break the cycle of poverty. The Sponsor a Child’s Education Project is a vital initiative that ensures vulnerable children—especially those in rural and underserved communities—have access to quality education and the resources they need to succeed.
Through this project, we provide financial assistance to children across Zvishavane District by covering school fees, supplying stationery, school uniforms, and clothing. We place a strong emphasis on supporting the education of the girl child by also distributing sanitary pads to improve school attendance and dignity.
Over the years, this project has made a meaningful impact. The very first child supported through this initiative graduated from Midlands State University in 2020 and has since completed a Master’s degree. Today, we are proud to be supporting a growing number of students in both primary and secondary schools, as well as tertiary institutions.
Our goal is to not only meet the immediate educational needs of these children but to walk with them through their academic journey, from primary school to university, creating pathways toward a brighter future.
This life-changing project is sustained through donations from well-wishers and the unwavering support of our community. We are actively seeking more partners to help expand this initiative so that no child is left behind due to lack of school fees or basic learning materials.
Supporting a Girl Child
Launched in April 2019, the Supporting a Girl Child project is dedicated to improving the health, dignity, and educational opportunities of vulnerable young girls, particularly in rural areas. Recognizing that the lack of access to sanitary products is one of the leading causes of absenteeism among school-going girls, this initiative addresses a critical need that often goes overlooked.
In many rural schools, girls are forced to miss several days of class each month simply because they cannot afford basic sanitary ware. Some lack even the most essential undergarments, making it difficult to attend school with confidence and dignity. In response, Shekinah Glory Organisation developed a comprehensive sanitary support package that includes:
- A set of sanitary pads
- A bar of bathing soap
- A pair of underwear
These packages are distributed directly to schoolgirls across the district, helping to restore their confidence, reduce absenteeism, and improve academic performance. This simple yet powerful intervention has already made a tangible difference in the lives of many girls, enabling them to stay in school and pursue their dreams without shame or interruption.
Through ongoing support from donors and community partners, we aim to expand the reach of this project and ensure that no girl’s education is compromised by a lack of basic menstrual hygiene supplies.
Income Generating Initiatives
At Shekinah Glory Organisation, sustainability fuels our mission. We are committed to creating self-sustaining systems that not only support our daily operations but also reinforce the skills development of the young people under our care.
Agriculture & Livestock at Kinsale Farm
Through our agricultural initiatives at Kinsale Farm, we rear livestock including goats, sheep, and engage in small-scale fish farming. Our market gardens provide fresh vegetables that contribute to a balanced diet for children at the Shekinah Home. Surplus produce is sold at local markets in Zvishavane, helping to generate income for the Home’s operational needs. These initiatives also serve as a platform for modeling practical agricultural best practices to our youth and the surrounding community.
Skills-Based Product Sales
The Shekinah Skills Training Centre contributes to the organization’s sustainability through the production and sale of high-quality, trainee-crafted goods. These include durable carpentry products and well-made school uniforms. By selling these items within the community, the centre not only helps offset training and operational costs but also demonstrates how vocational skills can be directly linked to livelihood creation.
These income-generating projects form a powerful cycle—where learning turns into productivity, and productivity strengthens the very programs that empower our youth.
Skills Training Centre
The Shekinah Glory Skills Training Centre, located at our Children’s Home in Ward 14, Chirere, Zvishavane, was officially launched on 14 February 2022. This transformative initiative is designed to equip vulnerable young people with practical, hands-on skills that open doors to self-reliance and economic independence. The centre was developed from a dilapidated farm workshop, which was fully renovated and upgraded to include boarding facilities. With access to electricity—made possible through the installation of a transformer and backup solar system—as well as clean water from a borehole, the centre provides a safe and supportive learning environment.
We offer four-month intensive training programs in:
- Sewing
- Carpentry
- Welding
Our target group includes:
- Children from Shekinah Glory Children’s Home and other homes without training facilities
- Young people living with disabilities
- Youth living with HIV/AIDS
- Vulnerable young people across Zvishavane who dropped out of school or never had the chance to attend
Trainees are not charged any fees. Accommodation and meals are fully provided for the duration of the training, as most of the learners come from across the district and cannot commute daily. Because many of these young people cannot read or write, the centre uses a practical, demonstration-based training approach.
To date, five cohorts totaling 188 youth have graduated from our vocational program, with 66 trainees currently enrolled. Graduates receive start-up kits through donor support and pursue three pathways:
- Launching independent businesses
- Joining our alumni
- Securing employment with local Zvishavane employers
Many are now gainfully employed at district businesses, applying their skills in carpentry, welding, and tailoring while uplifting their communities. This initiative continues to transform lives through practical training and sustainable opportunities
This is a relatively new project for Shekinah Glory Organization and will facilitate volunteering opportunities for young people of various age groups by providing their time for free to support our charity work. Volunteers will support Shekinah Glory Organization, Shekinah Glory Children’s Home and the Shekinah Glory Children’s Home Skills Training Centre in various areas of interest. Community Humanitarian Support
Shekinah Glory Organisation continues to stand as a beacon of hope in the Zvishavane District, serving as a first responder to the needs of vulnerable individuals and families. Our humanitarian support extends beyond the walls of the Children’s Home, reaching into communities where hardship, disability, and lack of access to essential services are most acute.
Emergency Relief & Family Support
We provide regular assistance to families in need through the distribution of food hampers, clothing, and blankets. These essential supplies help cushion families against the harsh effects of poverty, food insecurity, and seasonal challenges, especially in rural and marginalized communities.
Disability Support & Inclusion
We are committed to promoting inclusivity and mobility for children living with disabilities. As part of this commitment, Shekinah has provided wheelchairs to enhance the independence and dignity of children with mobility challenges. We also facilitated sign language training for children who are deaf and non-verbal in the Chief Masunda area, creating pathways for communication and learning.
Medical Assistance
Recognizing that access to healthcare is a major challenge for many in our district, Shekinah has stepped in to financially support critical medical interventions. To date, we have assisted three individuals in undergoing life-changing surgeries at major hospitals including Midlands Provincial Hospital, Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare, and Karanda Mission Hospital in Mt. Darwin.
Through these efforts, Shekinah continues to uplift, empower, and restore dignity to the most vulnerable members of our society—ensuring that no one is left behind.
