Income Generating Initiatives
We have a number of small income generating initiatives that are ongoing at the Shekinah Children’s Home.
- Agriculture Initiative: Currently the organization has an incubator for hatching eggs and is rearing road runner chickens for sale. Shekinah is into market gardening though at a small scale, we grow our own vegetables. The produce is used to feed the children at the home with a balanced diet and excess produce is sold to the local community in Zvishavane market to raise income for other needs. We also have goats, sheep, rabbits and also do fish farming.
- Sewing Initiative: This initiative provides uniforms for our children at the home as well as those under our project “Support a Child’s Education”. This initiative also works as an income generating initiative as we supply orders from the community with low cost uniforms.
- Making of Detergents: Shekinah has also launched an income generating initiative which focuses on making detergents which are being used at the Children’s Home and the same items are sold to the community in the District. We make things like Petroleum Jelly, Laundry soap, powdered soap, Drinks, Candles, Floor Polish, Toilet Cleaner Liquid and Dish Washing Liquid and Scouring Powder. Our older children at the home were trained to make these items and are supervised by staff at the Hom
Every effort to rehabilitate and empower children must include access to education. This project, in 2021 was supporting 133 children in various levels of education in rural and urban Zvishavane with school fees. In 2020, alone we supported 172 children. Some of the girl children got married during the lockdown, some of the children migrated to rural areas because of the economic challenges due to challenges brought about by Covid 19 and some children transferred to other districts hence the variance in children supported in 2020 and 2021. Some of the children being supported by this project, in addition to school fees support are also receiving school stationery, uniforms and clothes. The first child we supported in this project graduated from University in the year 2020 at Midlands State University, and we have 2 more students who enrolled into University at the Great Zimbabwe University in the same year 2020.
This project was launched in April 2019 in a bid to assist vulnerable young girls with sanitary pads. The inability of the girl child especially in rural schools to acquire sanitary ware is affecting school attendances. In some cases the rural school girls do not have pants and as such this prompted the inclusion of pants and a tablet of soap to the sanitary package.
This Project was established in partnership with the National Aids Council (NAC) and Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) to support HIV Positive children and Adolescents by promoting adherence to treatment. The project promotes networking and learning through the establishment of support groups at community level. The project was established in December 2019 and currently we have 13 support groups at the 13 out of 15 Health Centers in Zvishavane District. The support groups meet at the Health Centers to enable learning about HIV and access to clinical support. The Support groups also act as a platform for addressing stigma and discrimination against HIV Positive Children. Shekinah is also assisting Child headed Households who are also HIV Positive with Food hampers and clothing. Some of the Children under this project are also benefitting from Schools Fees Support under our Project Sponsor a Child’s Education.
Shekinah Glory Children’s Home completed the construction of a skills training center located at the children’s home in ward 14, Chirere in Zvishavane. Our target group will be mainly children from the Shekinah Glory Children’s Home, young people who dropped out of formal education for various reasons, young people living with disabilities and could not be absorbed into formal education because of non-availability of appropriate institutions in the district.
